Awareness of thoughts

To become aware of thoughts we need to be relaxed, not trying too hard, and not expecting that all our thoughts will be important. Look to observe the everyday, any moment kind of thoughts. It may be found, even in a short span of time, that the mind is considering many things. Multiple layers of thought appear to be occurring: processing an earlier conversation; engaged in day to day tasks and problems; wondering what’s for lunch; remembering, remembering almost anything…

We are so busy thinking we are rarely able to catch ourselves in the process. We are so entangled in the thoughts there is no space in between them and, so, no vantage point from which to observe these thoughts. The mind may go blank when we confront it directly, and it will wander off on another subject altogether whenever we try to hold it focused.

The aim is to contact and tap into the flow of thought. It doesn’t matter what the thoughts are, they may be useful, they may not. The space to be in is similar to the place we are often in when just waking. The body is relaxed and the mind is unguarded. In such a state there is the potential for a clear uninterrupted stream of thoughts.

Remember to stand as the observer of this flow, aim to be disentangled from the thoughts. Every time entanglement comes simply let the thought go, it will have other opportunities to arise.

Awareness of thoughts

Thinking about thoughts

We have approximately eighty thousand thoughts each day, unfortunately, tomorrow, ninety percent of our thoughts will be the same as the ones we had today.
