Living Consciously, one topic at a time

The Living Consciously courses at the heart of Rocklyn Yoga Ashram have been completely revised to create a suite of balanced online programs that include daily contemplations and a closely integrated support program of postures, breathing and meditation.
Each aspect of the program builds conscious awareness in every aspect of life.

Topic 2: Sensory awareness

Topic 3: Thoughts

Continue the process with an exploration of the thought process. A balanced program for three or more days of postures, breathing, yoga nidra and meditation interwoven with the theme to explore in the activities of each day. Video, audio and text files. Click link for more details.

Topic 4: Emotions

Seeing our life’s emotional patterns is a key to understanding ourselves, but seeing them as they are, creating a space where emotions can be felt, accepted and understood, without falling head long into them, is one of the most challenging tasks of self observation. A new selection of practices on the theme is provided.

Topic 5: Action and Reaction

It is one task to carefully observe how we “act”, but it adds a whole new dynamic dimension when we begin to observe how we “react” in the situations and interactions of our lives.
Eventually, the ability to self monitor our reactions creates extra thinking time, slowing down automatic unwanted reactions, so that we are able to intercept the unwanted reaction and respond more constructively. A new selection of practices supports the development of this skill.

Topic 6: Energy & its effects on the mind

There are subtle rhythms to our energies. Physical activity, yoga practices, mental activity, even the way we breathe, all have energetic affects that come into play physically, emotionally, and mentally, as we move through the day.
Become conscious of the ebb and flow of energy throughout the day, the effects on the mind, and the energetic interactions with the day’s events.  A new selection of practices supports the process.

Topic 7: Awareness of attitudes

Attitudes, rather than being a result of, or reaction to, the situation that we are in, may be a direct result of the reverse. Our attitudes contribute a great deal to wherever in life we happen to be, having informed our choices and decisions all along the way. A new selection of practices supports the development of this skill of observing the play of positivity and negativity in our lives.

There is much more to yoga

Most people are familiar with the idea that yoga involves physical postures. Many people have undertaken a weekly class at their gym or with a yoga teacher in their community. Others have heard of yoga in relation to breathing practices, relaxation, and meditation. Yoga does involve these things and they are fundamental to the way yoga works.

Yet there is much more to yoga. It is a complete system for managing our situation in life.

When yoga overflows out of the weekly class and into our lives it starts to become part of a process of personal transformation.

When we open ourselves to change with the physical yoga practices, life may reveal itself in ways we hadn’t previously considered. We discover opportunities for a richer fuller life.

A primary aim of these courses is to use the details of everyday living as raw material for developing and maintaining self-awareness.

Each topic focuses on techniques for developing self-observation, which in turn assists us to reflect more impartially and act more wisely.

Thousands of years of tradition made simple

The systematic progression to a quieter mind is traditionally known as the process of developing pratyahara – withdrawal of the mind from the senses – where the layers of physical, sensual, emotional and mental awareness are traversed, explored and released on the way to creating a quiet mind capable of the deeper states of meditation. Even if we were to go no further, the practical benefits of a quiet mind are of great value.

These online courses have evolved from the program at Rocklyn Yoga Ashram in Victoria, Australia and the book Yoga with Attitude.
